Dialogue[]

Begin
Oh! Uh, hello. Pardon me, I was rather deep in thought.
About what?
Well, I was reading through a book my grandfather left me... one of the old world, yes?... It spoke of the trade routes frequented in those days, but peculiarly these journeys were taken by horse and carriage, rather than by sea.
[Continue]
Isn't that remarkable? That they travelled such distances by animal? Just what world did our ancestors live in?

Huh? I'm sorry... I don't have anything for you. Please, I could get into a lot of trouble for speaking to you.

These old books are more of a passing fancy of mine, but I've heard there's an order of scholars that devote their life to researching the old world. Don't you wonder what things were like back then?
Is there anything you can tell me about Etris? Is there anything you can tell me about the Old World?
If you head past the inn, you'll find the Lord Regent's estate. I would not advise entering without an invitation, however. Even a bookish fool such as I knows when I am not welcome. There is much for us all to learn about it and its people. I'm by no means an expert, but my grandfather was one of the Old Stewards, the keepers of the knowledge of the Old World. Perhaps if you were able to find one of these Old Stewards they might be able to answer any burning questions of yours.
Who is this Lord Regent exactly? End
The Lord Regent is the 'acting regent' of Etrea. That is to say, he is not the prophesied King, but he still holds absolute power over Etrea. In recent years, he has sequestered himself away in his palace, rarely making an appearance. Some worry that he has grown ill, but considering that his duties have not been passed on to any of his officials, I doubt this is the case.

I've heard about a King of Etrea, what can you tell me about him?
Ah, hard to avoid hearing about him here. He's somewhat of a mythical figure, though there was a real man behind all the myth. King Rolen Vashtir I reigned through the early 6th century CE and made quite a name for himself and Etrea on the world stage. As fate would sadly have it, he set off on a voyage with a small fleet of ships and never returned
The 6th century CE?! They don't seriously think he's coming back, do they? Even if it's farfetched, I suppose waiting for his return gives people something to hope for.
Well, you know how myths and legends are. You could call it wishful thinking, but with the strange state of our world, crazier things have happened, no? Quite so. The Kingdom has never quite bounced back from the loss of their king. Though he was by no means a perfect man in life, he has grown into something larger than just a man in myth?
So there haven't been any kings since?
Indeed. Since the King's departure, the Kingdom has been governed by a line of Lord Guardians - stewards of the throne who are er... warming the seat, so to speak. Of course, the Lord Regent does not style himself as such... Ahem. Was there anything else you wanted to know?
Who is this Lord Regent exactly? Is what they say of the King's Ardour true? Or is that just a myth, too?
[See previous instance] *The Bookkeeper flashes a brief smile at you before tidying away some notes.* Oh, it's quite true. And not just Ardour, either. Many sources suggest he was capable of wielding all three.
All three? How's that?
The myths differ in their accounts, but they speak of him travelling to the Southern Luminant to strike a deal with an entity of some kind. Some attribute it to Mur, others to something more ancient. Perhaps even something from below...
A deal?
Mm. Much like the Splinterblade that the King is famed for, the legends say that the deal he struck split his soul into three parts in order to accomplish the feat.

What's the deal with this 'Mur' figure?
Well, you'll get a lot of conflicting answers depending on who you ask. Here in Etrea, she's fabled as the Goddess who blessed the Etreans of the Resurgence with the understanding of Murmurs, The more contemporary views here is that she was a Celestial who aided Etrea. Though, uh. Be careful who you bring that up around. There are many in these parts who adhere to the old faith rather zealously...
And what do you think?
*He nervously scratches behind his ear.* What I can say is... Ah... Well. I can't say that I have personally seen a great deal of information about Mur outside of Etrea.
So... Speaking rather tactically here, aren't we?
Well, it's possible that she only made herself known to those of the Etrean Luminant. And it's also possible that if she appeared in other lands, they may well have given her another name... *He sighs.* When it comes to Celestials, there's really no way of knowing unless you find the damned things and talk to them. *He gives you a wry smile.* The tolerance of historians and recordkeepers only extend so far as you don't start contradicting what people already hold to be true. Books are... flammable things. Accidents happen. Often to historians with mysteriously large paper cuts in their abdomen.
Have you spoken to a Celestial? So...
*His attention affixes itself to the grain of the wood behind you.* No. Don't be foolish, I'm not so fortunate as that. Anyway. Was there anything else you'd like to know about? [See first instance]
