“ The devouring of the Drakeheart had not lead to infinite wisdom, but an overwhelming sensation of dread. Countless memories of dark history, strife, tragedy, filled the head of the Steward. In his very place, he began to become a creature most grotesque. And thus, the first Dread Serpent was born, corrupted by the will of a thousand dead eras, a mind drowned with only histories of tragedy. ”

Commonly referred to by the community as Kaido (Developers prefer that it is referred to as the Dread Serpent).

Description[]

A once normal steward seeking knowledge but now twisted into a mind of corruption, thus spawning a monstrous race of dragons, the Dread Serpent is a massive Boss that appears in the Voidsea by chance or through usage of Ardour Manifestation. It's spawn is displayed by a mass of bubbles being on the water.

The Dread Serpent appears as a long, gray serpent-like dragon possessing four horns and eyes. It sports a black mane and beard, as well as a black fur that runs throughout its back, ending with a fire-shaped tail. It primarily uses the power of Frostdraw to stop boats and prey alike.

Upon defeat, a purple orb flutters toward the player, granting Murmur: Ardour. You must hit him at least once to obtain the Murmur. It will not be granted if you already have a Murmur, although the orb still spawns and it still says it granted you the Murmur.

Though there are many seen today, the first Dread Serpent was born when a man, only known as The Mad Steward, ate the heart of an Elder Edenkite, instantly flooding his mind with every tragedy that ever occurred, filling him with dread and transforming him into the first Dread Serpent. The man in question possessed Murmur: Ardour, which is why killing one of the Dread Serpents results in obtaining it. Where the rest came from or why they all provide Ardour on death is unknown. The background information concerning the Dread Serpent is derived mainly from the lore book titled Lumen's Folklore: Volume 'North'.

Trivia[]

  • It closely resembles serpent-style dragons from Chinese Folklore.
  • Anyone can get the Murmur as long as you did any damage, it doesn't matter how many people hit him, everyone will get the Murmur unless they already have one
  • You will only get hit if you are close to him, so keep your distance while behind him and be prepared to roll when he does a flip.
  • Since the Dread Serpent is so rare, having multiple people will boost the spawn rate, making the process of finding him much easier.
  • It is highly implied that a Dread Serpent is also responsible for the sinking of the Petra's Dawn, the first boat to cross the Voidsea without the help of a Lightkeeper's Gift, as the Petra's Anchor is one of its drops.
  • The Dread Serpent's health does not increase with the number of people fighting it, so it is beneficial to fight it with a group of friends.
  • Its appearance is supposedly exactly what an Elder Edenkite once looked like, only wingless.
  • Despite most of the community calling the Dread Serpent Kaido, Arch-Mage and some developers have express distaste to using the name and wish that people call it Dread Serpent.[citation needed]
  • It's possible that the Dread Serpent will receive a rework to its appearance and moveset in a future update.[citation needed]
  • Was bugged and unable to spawn from 05/08/23 to 05/13/23.
  • Another bug was present since release until around October 2023, which made the Dread Serpent unable to spawn if anyone contained "(any letter)drago". This was because Ardour Manifestation checked for ".drago" which allowed anyone with drago at the start of their name to spawn but not drago with a letter before it.
  • It would take roughly 300-400 cannonball shots to kill a Dread Serpent. At Power 20 the amount is reduced to roughly 15-30 cannonball shots depending on PvE damage.
  • This is the preferred boss to fight if you are trying to obtain the Echo Talent: Chain of Perfection, as he can mostly be cheesed by staying behind his back. However, be careful because when the Dread Serpent comes out of the water it might hit you so be sure to dodge.
  • It has infinite-aggro, meaning if it gets flung away, it will still endlessly target you and attempt to reach you, even in Dimensional Travel.
  • The only boss to not have a unique combat theme.
  • Formerly summonable via Dimensional Travel anywhere due to leaving the Interstice putting you in a brief state of being considered in the Voidsea. The Dread Serpent would spawn wherever you returned to the overworld at.
