“ A strange bell has been spotted within the Celtor Waste. Only a quintuplet of powerful adventurers may ring it to bring unforetold consequences... but the rewards are just as great. ”

Description[]

Hell Mode is a player-activated event that takes place within Layer 1 of The Depths.

A group of powerful adventurers must join forces in this hellish onslaught of monsters to obtain great rewards.

Activation Method and Effects[]

The Hell Mode Bell can be found within the Celtor Wastes. To activate Hell Mode, 4 players who are at least power 15 must ring the bell. For every player that rings the bell after the required 4, 10 more mob kills will be required for the event to end. The maximum amount of rings is 15.

Once the conditions are met, The Depths (current server) will take on a hellish red tint, and the effects of Hell Mode will be activated:

  • Spawn rates are increased by ~10x.
  • Every mob that can normally spawn corrupted will be corrupted, with the exception of King Threshers, and Broodlords which will not spawn corrupted.
  • The Enforcer and the Nautilodaunt are added to the regular spawn pool for the duration of the event.
  • The Enforcer's Space Pull attack is disabled to prevent people being wiped to Enforcers falling into the void. Existing Enforcers can use the attack again once Hell Mode ends.
    • King Thresher's burrowing attack is disabled.
    • Mudskipper Broodlords have their anti-heal reduced to 50%
  • Megalodaunts will always spawn as their Alpha version.

These conditions affect everybody currently in the server, not just the people who interacted with the bell. Only those who rang the bell have the increased spawn rate, however.

Completion and Reward[]

Hell Mode can be completed by fulfilling one requirement:

  • Have killed 100 monsters + 10 for each additional player rang the bell (shared across all players).

If the 20 minutes mark is reached before the kill requirement, the event will forcefully end, and no reward will be granted.

The event will end early if the original players who activate the event all die or otherwise leave the server.

Upon reaching 100 or more kills, players that rung the bell or had participated by killing at least one monster (untested) will receive Diver's Light Plate in their inventory and a chest that will appear under them. These chests contain very high tier items, including a very large number of Relics, Enchant Stones and Greases, endgame and midgame equipment and weapons with guarantee 2-star quality and Deep Gems. These chests are accessible to any player and anyone can take the contents, so it is recommended to distance yourself from any players you do not trust when spawning a chest. Lower tier chests that are still more valuable than your average depths chest will also spawn after a kill of some specific monsters that are not locked to a certain player.

Tips[]

Although Hell Mode is scary, the rewards are often worth the trouble due to both the completion reward and the increased spawn rate of corrupted mobs. Here's a few tips:

  • Use height to your advantage to get to a safe place. Although most monsters can jump somewhat high, they will have trouble hitting you depending on how high you are. Finding high ground to heal, looking around for monsters and taking a breather is important as you do not want to get jumped by enemies you're not ready for. Be wary though, as Nautilodaunts and Deep Owls can scale even the greatest of walls. The Enforcer doesn't have its usual pull ability so do not worry about it.
  • Most players in Hell Mode servers will be neutral or peaceful. This isn't guaranteed of course but due to how difficult Hell Mode can be, working together is almost a necessity to survive. There are still some threats like Contractors and depths gankers looking for loot, but this is unlikely and you'll likely have others around to help you.
  • PVP builds are recommended. Due to recent updates changing the spawn-rate of events and mobs, hellmode will be easier and possible with pvp builds. Pvp builds are highly recommended if you are fighting alongside pve builds due to the increase in depths gankers found in hellmode servers.
  • When fighting monsters in a group, avoid hitting your allies. This will not put them in player combat but will still damage them.
  • Other players that didn't ring the bell can combat tag you, and vice versa. Avoid interacting with them as much as possible, since the lack of health packs could lead to your demise.
  • Fighting near the Temple of Hearts is a fairly good option, as almost no mobs can make it inside. Nautilodaunts, Threshers, and Deep Owls might be able to follow you in, but you'll be in the clear once they're dead.
  • Most heavy weapons are solid in Hell Mode, but the Enforcer's Axe is a particularly good choice thanks to its critical.
    • Many Enchantments are viable in Hell Mode as well. Detonation can build up stacks quickly but risks hitting friends. Vampirism boosts longevity. Providence's Thorns punishes anything you can frequently parry, and Wild does reduced damage to allies in addition to doing a lot of damage to stacked mobs. Astral is a simple and effective option for killing faster.
  • If you are low on health, try to kill a weaker monster, such as a Lionfish, Thresher, or Megalodaunt.
  • If you are not proficient at killing Nautilodaunts on your own, tell your teammates to help you with them, since you will not have any time to try running away for a health pack. Nautilodaunts are a lot easier to beat in a team.
  • Be very careful of Mudskipper Broodlords. They are probably the most dangerous thing in Hell Mode thanks to their high stats, anti-heal, and unparriable moves.
  • Camping in Castle Light during Hell Mode will render you ineligible for rewards.
    • It is, however, a common strategy to use a teleport item (Call of the deep, Teleportation/Dimensional Travel Resonance) or any other method of transportation to go to Castle Light where you more easily swap out with other players and make use of it's surrounding landscape. This is also an efficient method to deal with hostile players.
  • If you are sure you have your Resonance and are below the hp barrier for jumping into the void, you may try to unlock it to gain full health to try and jump in again. This can be done by getting damaged by players, monsters, or climbing right before you reach the void to take fall damage. Be advised that this will send you to Layer 2 without a lighthook where you can wipe to the dangers that are present down there.

Trivia[]

  • Servers in Hell Mode will be identifiable in the server browser by a unique red hue.
  • The initial screen shake and red tint of Hell Mode can be seen in the Fragments of Self.
  • Some servers can rarely bug and retain Hell Mode features, even after the original 20 minutes is up. Death in this is restorable.
  • In any private server, hell mode can be activated by just one player.
  • The hell bell was remodeled in the 25.1.2025 weekly update.
