“ Chain those who oppose our justice. Should you find someone truly worthy of being ensnared by our chains, the Words will surely find you. ”

Description

Oath: Chainwarden is one of the 16 obtainable Oaths in Deepwoken. The Oath specializes in conjuring chains on foes, subsequently crippling their mobility while also offering mantras that deal significant true damage if used correctly.

“ What is it? You had better not be wasting my time. There's filth that requires scraping off the map. ”

Chainwardens are strong enforcers of justice serving The Central Authority. They are sworn to enact justice upon anyone they determine to oppose it, using their Chains to condemn and punish those who oppose their own sense of order.

Obtainment

  1. The Oath requires at least 40 points combined into Strength, Fortitude and Willpower, such as 20 Strength, 5 Fortitude and 15 Willpower or 0 Strength, 30 Fortitude and 10 Willpower (You can have more than 40 in those three stats).
  2. Speak to Vice Warden Morredh in Fort Merit with Friend rep or higher, and retrieve a hostage below the Castle Ruins at Summer Isle.
  3. After talking to the hostage below the building, go back up the ladder. This will spawn Emar Vend, a rogue Chainwarden wielding a Darksteel Greatsword and Ironsing mantras. Upon defeating him, you will be granted the Oath. (Note, if more than one person tries to obtain the Oath, Emar Vend will spawn only ONCE. Whoever spawns him gets the Oath from the grip but, after getting kill credit, go back to Vice Warden Morredh and he will instead give you the Oath.)

Chainwarden cannot be reobtained if you Oathbreak it, as the Vice Warden will insult you.

Progression

Up to an amount of two times in total can these corresponding methods be applied to progress the Oath:

  1. Gripping players who have Hunted or below reputation with The Central Authority whilst having them chained.
  2. Defeating humanoid bosses that are major enemies of the Authority. They must be chained when they die to progress the Oath.

Known humanoids bosses are:

Effects

The Oath grants an extra Wildcard and 2 Combat mantra slots.

As for appearance, it adds a chained gauntlet to your left arm, and a chained belt to the waist. While the chains are able to be dyed, the gauntlet is not. If a pair of Cestus is equipped, the gauntlet overrides the appearance of the Cestus on the left arm. This strangely also applies to the Anklets of Alsin, only having the right leg use the anklet, despite the gauntlet not being attached to the leg.

Abilities

  • Restrain - Combat Mantra
    • Deliver a powerful kick that binds your opponent's soul to yours.
    • Deals true damage.
    • Applies a chain that halts the opponent's mobility.
    • Heavily reduced cooldown on hit/block.
    • CURRENTLY BUGGED: BLOODLESS GEM DOES NOT WORK WITH THIS MANTRA.
    • Chain is applied even if the mantra dodged or blocked, but not when parried
  • Impel - Combat Mantra
    • Blast through your opponent's guard and pull them towards you.
    • Fire 4 dark blasts at your cursor, chaining those hit by at least 3 blasts. Enemies hit by the mantra while chained will then get pulled and kicked away, similar to Chain Lash (will not remove chains).
    • Aimable with your mouse.
    • This mantra has a 15 second cooldown.
  • Rupture - Combat Mantra
    • Detonate your chained target, unleashing a powerful blast that shatters their restraints and inflicts significant damage.
    • On base use, readies two devastating punches that deals damage and dazes on hit. The second punch will only commence if the first one hits a valid target.
    • On a chained target, the user pulls on the chain, dealing damage and exploding enemies away from your camera placement.
    • If you add a reversal spark, it will send enemies away in the opposite way of your camera.
  • Perpetual Wrath - Passive: Unleash the true power of Restrain. Each successive hit will increase its damage. stacking up to the base damage.
    • Damage stacks are independent from person to person.
    • After using Restrain 3+ times, casting Restrain will cause an AOE blast.
  • Chain Lash - Passive: On flourish, whip your chain to seize and pull enemies toward you, setting them up for a crushing kick.
    • Using an M1 after the chain has been pulled with cause you to kick your foes, sending them flying.
      • The Chain applied can be used for Rupture.
    • The kick deals approximately 45 damage, and is unknown to be reduced by any amount of armor.

Trivia

  • Restrain chains the opponent even if the hit was blocked.
  • Restrain has almost no cooldown as long as you are landing the mantra, working even if dodged or blocked, but not when parried. Restrain goes on cooldown if whiffed
  • Chained targets from Restrain are slowed when they run away from you.
  • Chainwarden can chain multiple enemies, but enemies can only be chained by one person at a time. Nothing happens if another Chainwarden attempts to chain an already chained enemy.
  • Using Rupture on a chained target will break the current chain and ragdoll the target in the direction of your camera (For example, looking behind you will ragdoll them toward you).
  • Emar Vend may break and not spawn sometimes and is unknown what exactly causing this. Rejoining on a new server will fix the issue and spawn the NPC.
  • On release, was an incredibly small and lackluster Oath, having only 2 Mantras and no passives/Talents, with Arch having said that there were no Talents, while melonbeard said the Oath was finished and needed no work.[1]
    • This was confirmed to be an error when a shadow-patch gave Chainwarden the Talents it was missing.
  • If you break your Oath using a Yunshul's wish at Temple of Hearts, Vice Warden Morredh says "Another deserter? You're pathetic."
  • Currently, this is one of four Oaths where you cannot skip progression with knowledge. (The others being Bladeharper, Saintsworn, and Soulbreaker)
    • This is probably due to the Oaths being new and the progression skip hasn't been implemented, or has been fully forgotten about.
  • Due to how easy this Oath's Requirements are to reach, it can be obtained on almost any build.
