- “ Those eyes.. you wish to walk alone too. ”
Description
Oath: Oathless is one of the 17 obtainable Oaths in Deepwoken. It is a rather varied Oath, given that its purpose is to extend the capabilities of what would be considered a Pathfinder. Together with Linkstrider, Fadetrimmer, Dawnwalker, and Contractor, it is one of 5 Oaths that have no direct stat requirements.
Despite its oxymoronic nature, this still counts as an Oath. So other Oaths like Linkstrider or Contractor that has their progression tied to killing Oath users can progress by killing people with this Oath, along with other Oaths.
Obtainment
To start the Oathless quest, head to the docks at Miner's Landing and pass through the entrance. Climb up to the Mystic in front and turn right, walking onwards until you find a log by the ledge facing the sea highway. Through this log is a cave in which Cerulean can be found leaning against a wall. They'll inform you that, in order to understand the freedom of being Oathless, you must seek out their disciples.
If you have obtained Oathless, you may speak to Cerulean again to permanently unlock it. This skips the quest on all of your characters/slots, even if that character/slot was created before you permanently unlocked Oathless. [Note that obtaining Oathless via any method requires 10 minutes of playtime on that slot.]
Oathless can be reobtained if you Oathbreak it.
Aforementioned log tunnel
Though order does not matter, the following order is recommended.
- Viridian is located at Fort Merit, in the street near the elevator.
- Saffron is located at Meteor Isle, in a 2-story house.
- Celadon is located at Summer Isle, on the second floor of the guildhall.
After talking to all three of their disciples, return to Cerulean to receive the Oath.

Effects
This Oath grants the player three extra Wildcard Mantra slots, 10 Health and 20% Oath armor. Oath Armor decreases the damage received from the Oath damage type[1].
As for its appearance, nothing is added to your outfit, making it impossible to tell if a person has Oathless or not, which makes sense because Oathless makes you unbound to an Oath.
Abilities
Passive
- Oath Armor - Oathless grants 20% Oath armor.
- This does not work on every Oath ability, as not all of them deal Oath damage in general.
- Due to this being "armor" instead of "resistance", PEN will affect it and it will be tied to your armor value, being deactivated if your armor is broken.
- Oath attacks with multiple damage types will effectively bypass your Oath armor because the game will take your highest applicable armor resistance and apply that for damage calculation. For example, if you have over 20% Physical resistance, you'll resist Bladeharper attacks based on your Physical resistance rather than your Oath resistance.
Talents
Sage of Wisps
There are two talents in the Sage of Wisps Talent category that require Oathless to be obtained. These Talents focus on the usage of every Attunement's Wisp Mantra. These Talents are not given by the Oathless Oath directly, but instead require the Oath as a prerequisite.
Despite keeping these talents after oathbreaking, they do not function without the Oathless Oath.
- Chorus of Souls - Alone, the Wisps lack a voice. But surrounded by so many, the frequencies overlap and you hear it true. (+1 Wisp Mantra Slot)
- Grants heightened health regeneration while all Wisps are active.
- Prerequisites: Oathless, 30 Bloodrend, 30 Flamecharm, 30 Frostdraw, 30 Galebreathe, 30 Ironsing, 30 Shadowcast, 30 Thundercall
- Wisp Convergence - When empowered by the Chorus, your Wisps now grant their elements to your strikes.
- This will not proc unless you have every Wisp Mantra active.
- Your basic attacks will apply the following status effects: Burn, Shock, Chill, Winded, and Shadow.
- Prerequisites: Oathless, Chorus of Souls
Mantras
Combat Mantras
After obtaining the Chorus of Souls Talent and obtaining a Resonance, you will be able to speak to Sibex to unlock the Soul Beam Mantra. This Mantra is not given by the Oathless Oath directly, but instead requires the Oath as a prerequisite. It is then obtained from a Whisper Draw.
Upon oathbreaking Oathless, Soul Beam will be removed from your character without granting a compensating whisper roll.

Trivia
- The first Oath to be released in the game.
- Used to be obtainable through a hand of cards at around Power 30 (the Verse 1 equivalent to current-day Power 10).
- Commonly agreed to be a subpar Oath compared to the other non-stat locked Oaths.
- However, being the only Oath to grant +3 Wildcard slots (with others giving only 1 or none) and its solid stats makes Oathless very flexible.
- Back when Mystics had unique dialogue for every Talent category, Oathless had the Mystic line "I am unbounded."
- Obtaining Oathless doesn't award the Oathsworn badge.
- You can still use Shrine of Order if you have Oathless.
- All of its quest characters are named after cities in the Kanto region from the Pokémon franchise. (These are all colours, Cerulean is blue, Viridian and celadon and blueish greens, and saffron is red.)
- Developer intentions behind the design of Oathless have historically been divisive.
- Prior to Verse 2, they stated that Oathless was canonically the strongest Oath, though the veracity and exact meaning behind this statement are unclear; the developers are prone to retconning old ideas should they no longer suit their progressing vision of Deepwoken.
- More recently, it was supposedly stated to be a "seatwarmer" with the justification being they would like to create enough Oaths such that Oathless becomes redundant—a comment that was received negatively by the community due to its quest being more tedious than other Oaths. Regardless of its intended obsolescence, it still receives balance and QoL changes.
- Oathless is the first, and currently only Oath that has non-Oath Talents and Mantras that stem off of it. Two Talents within the Sage of Wisps Talent category as well as a combat Mantra that requires said Talents are entirely exclusive to the Oathless Oath despite not technically being Oath Talents/Mantras.
- Oathless counts for the "Obtained Oath" Echo Triumph.
- Because Oathless could be obtained so quickly with the Ignition Delver Origin, this was a very good Echo farm method for a few months after it's discovery. This Echo farm was effectively removed however when someone made a macro to do it overnight, which forced the developers to step in and change Oathless' requirement to have 10 minutes of playtime. 10 minutes of playtime might not seem like that much of a nerf to the Echo farm as a whole, but this method was only good due to how quickly it could be performed as it did not give nearly as much Echoes as other, older methods.
- Because the requirement is entirely playtime based, it is still possible to macro the Oath's obtainment for Echoes. And while the rates are much worse, the fact that you are still able to macro it has made the change have the reputation of no more than a band-aid fix within the community.
- A bit of an oxymoron, because by being Oathless, you therefore have an Oath.
- Weirdly enough, Saffron has a unique dialogue compared to the other disciples, being "Those eyes... You wish to" and continue. While the others, Viridian and Celadon, saying "Those eyes.. you wish to" and continue.
- The only difference these have is that, Saffron has 3 dots and a capitalized Y in "You", while the others have 2 dots and a lower case Y in "you"
