Description[]
Random encounters are randomly spawning events that occur throughout target areas in Deepwoken. Although some encounters are specific to certain areas, the majority can be found anywhere. Furthermore, when two or more different encounters meet each other, it will often result in a large battle.
Note: This is not yet a comprehensive list of every single random encounter: more will be added.
AI-Driven Encounters[]
These events occur randomly in the world or within a location.
Etrean Luminant[]
Fight between Factions[]
Groups of NPCs from different factions will spawn in Etrean Luminant and attack each other. Helping a side will usually reward you with their respective reputation.
- Vigil Swordsmen vs Authority Officers (Erisia)
- Etrean Soldiers vs Authority Officers (Upper Erisia)
- Legion Soldiers vs Authority Officers (Upper Erisia)
- Legion Captain + Legion Soldier vs Authority Officers (The Vipers Jaw/Upper Erisia)
Bandit Camp[]
A campfire, circled by three NPCs, consisting of two regular bandits and one Bandit Leader. Loot from the chests after killing every bandit is mediocre (as expected, for bandits are farmed by low levels). Occurs at Erisia.
Bandit Ambush[]
While in Erisia, there is a chance that three bandits will fall from the sky and ambush you. This event is similar to the Bandit Camp event, but you cannot assassinate the captain, as they automatically aggro onto you. If they spawn on an elevated space or behind an object, it is possible to assassinate the regular bandits, though note gripping their captain will alert them and only downs the captain unless you have the Cutthroat Assassin Talent. Completing this event rewards you with XP and a chest at which where they appeared from. Occurs at Erisia.
Thieves[]
A group of three thieves, recognizable by their black armor and the lack of campfire. They will always wield a dagger. In the event where the player is knocked in their presence, the bandits will mug any downed non bandit or thief for their 56 and saying "Score!" before disappearing into a puff of shadow, leaving the player alive. If the player were to complete this event, the players will be rewarded XP and a chest. Occurs at Erisia. They are the only non-faction hostile NPCs to spare the player intentionally.
Knives of Eylis[]
Three to four Knives of Eylis are escorting a captured a Navean Nomad Hostage in Upper Erisia. They wield Whaling Knives and the leader of the group has the ability to create an expanding bubble which slows time inside it. Defeating them will reward you with a chest and EXP, but killing them also gives negative Reputations in Knives of Eylis. Occurs at Upper Erisia. Occasionally the captain may spawn on his own and without a hostage, only around the Bandit Village.
The hostage is no different from any other Navaen nomad hostage, and you may give them into the Eastern Camp Master.
Authority Scouts[]
In Upper Erisia, you may see four Authority members marching back and forth in unison. Two of them will be Authority Officers and the other two will be Authority Soldiers. Defeating them will reward you with EXP and a chest, but killing them also gives negative Authority Reputation. This can be avoided by letting the Soldiers set the corpses on fire, as that will cause them to die without you earning negative rep. They will not automatically engage you if you have neutral reputation.
Lost Villagers[]
In Upper Erisia, the player can encounter two villager NPCs in Stranded clothes. You will need to bring these NPCs to the Royal Pathfinder at the Pathfinder's Respite. After doing so, the player will be rewarded a chest and some XP, similar to the Fort Merit rescue quest. Alastir will give you new dialogue options after this. This quest is repeatable. Gripping the NPCs will make them say "Wait, please take us to the shrine!" hinting towards the later use of them.
Mudskipper Emergence[]
An encounter limited to Erisia, can happen during any season, contrary to the popular belief that it only happens during Spring and Summer. A group of special Mudskippers will emerge from the ground, some of them use a modified Gale Force to push the target back, while the others explode on death, indicated by larger stomachs and a darker green coloration. These explosions instantly execute anyone that has been downed around them. This encounter is made up of three waves. Successfully killing all the Mudskippers will spawn a large chest where the Mudskippers emerged.
Golden Warrior[]
A fighter hailing from The Rat's Den, recognizable by his gold armor (not to be confused with the Legion), looking for a worthy opponent. He invites the player to a battle to the death, even allowing the player to get 3 free hits before he retaliates. He wields a combat axe and uses Galebreathe. Upon death, he will drop a Gold Plate, five of which can be given to the bouncer at the Rat's Den for a loot chest. Defeating him will grant the player a chest which spawns where he stood. Occurs in Erisia.
Hobo[]
The Hobo can be found across Erisia and will spawn three chests around him. If you interact with the Hobo, they will brag of their wealth. With 50+ Charisma, you can take one of their chests. If you open one of their chests (you don't have to take the loot), they will yell at you and start to become hostile. Be careful, because he is a very annoying opponent, with Flamecharm and no cooldowns on their Mantra. He is an enemy of all factions. Though, he can be easily taken out if you get it on a wall and get it stunned. The Hobo also uses the old AI of the Flamecharm Songseeker.
Pathfinders[]
Rarely, the player may find 2 Pathfinders sitting around a campfire with a teacher. Most people mistake them for bandits and regret it when they see them using Frostdraw mantras. Talking to the teacher will grant the player the ability to upgrade one of their main attributes (Strength, Fortitude, Agility, Intelligence, Willpower, and Charisma) with no cost. This will use one of your investment points. Killing them may reward you with Frigid Prisms. Finishing the dialogue will not reward you with a chest, nor will killing them. Occurs in Erisia. Curiously, they hate all factions and vice versa.
Erisia Merchant[]
A bound Etrean with a Pathfinder Cloak surrounded by a bandit camp can be found in Lower Erisia. Killing the bandits without killing the merchant grants a chest containing lower-erisia loot.
Megalodaunt vs Golem[]
A Megalodaunt can be found fighting a Golem in Upper Erisia (especially in Burning Stone Garden). The Golem will usually win. If you are low level, use this opportunity to finish off the victor, as it is probably low from the fight.
Feasting Megalodaunt[]
A Megalodaunt feasting on the corpse of an Authority Soldier, found in Upper Erisia. Stuffs its face until attacked or despawns. When you kill the Megalodaunt, the Authority Solider's corpse will turn into a chest.
Deep Owl[]
Sparse cloud of black feathers that gently fall down around an area. Upon entering the feathers, the Deep Owl will immediately drop down from the sky and open a dialogue with the player. Only spawn in the Etrean Luminant while the moon is out or in the First Layer. An owl also spawns in The Lordsgrove in a predetermined location but without black feathers as a warning and will automatically attack you.
Bandit Attack[]
In Etris two bandits can spawn in front of the guards near the entrance. Helping the guards will reward you, giving you XP and reputation. This event does not spawn a chest. This event is triggered to occur when a player comes within range of the entrance so hearing this event without your presence is a blatant sign of another player. There's a small chance for them to drop low tier mantra modifiers. At the Isle of Vigils, they spawn on a bridge leading to the Barber shop.
Brainsucker Swarm[]
An event that happens inStarswept Valley or Minityrsa. Two Brainsuckers spawn in mid air and swarm their prey, all dive bombing them at once. Killing them spawns a chest in the fitted area.
Ministry Necromancer[]
Exclusive to Minityrsa, this is a unique humanoid enemy that is able to use shadowcast and summon two special Mudskippers; the Redskipper and Blueskipper consisting of one than can use Flamecharm and another that can use Frostdraw. They will spawn in a medatitive position, and will only be aggro'd if it sees a player or provoked by an attack.
Eastern Luminant[]
Fight between Factions[]
Groups of NPCs from different factions will spawn in Eastern Luminant and attack each other. Helping a side will usually reward you with their respective reputation.
- Summer Company Guards vs Ignition Union Fighters (Summer Isle/Miner's Landing/Saramaed Summit)
- Eastern Tribe Nomad + Eastern Tribal Leader vs Ministry Scouts (Summer Isle)
- Vigil Swordsmen vs Hive Scouts (Starswept Valley)
- Legion Captain vs Authority Lieutenant (Starswept Valley)
- Hive Construct vs Authority Captain (Starswept Valley)
Songseeker[]
In the Songseeker Wilds, a Songseeker may spawn anywhere on the island. They can be seen meditating, but will aggro onto you if you enter their line of sight or you attack them. They will be using one of four elements, which will be Flamecharm, Frostdraw, Thundercall or Galebreathe. They cannot be assassinated. Defeating them will reward you with a good chunk of XP and a chest.
Legion Sniper[]
A single Legion Sniper will spawn in Starswept Valley. Killing him will reward the player with XP and a chest, but also negative reputation with The Hundred Legions. He can be talked to (with a good reputation) and can also be used to obtain a recommendation for Legion Kata if you have already helped at least two Legion Captains in their respective events.
Serena[]
A NPC called Serena will spawn in Starswept Valley sitting down, asking for water from a Canteen. Upon giving her a canteen, she will either attack the player or accept the drink. If she accepts the water or if you beat her in a fight, a chest will spawn. She may also attack the player if she is not given a canteen.
Summer Isle Bandit Raid[]
Groups of bandits engage the guards of Summer Isle in various locations. There are two main types:
- Regular bandit raid: Three bandits, the type of bandits is random, can range from three Bandit Captains to two Captains and one regular to just three regular bandits.
- Greater bandit raid: Seven or so regular bandits that spawn on the steps.
Ministry Massacre[]
A single Ministry scout, sitting around a campfire in Summer Isle, surrounded by the corpses of bandits. Killing them will reward you with EXP and the campfire will turn into a chest.
Megalodaunt vs Red Megalodaunt[]
Exclusive to the Songseeker Wilds. This is a rare event involving a regular Megalodaunt fighting its red variant. If left by themselves, the red one will always win. Red Megalodaunts have roughly 2x it's normal HP and being able to rain fire swords.
Meteor Isle Authority Raid[]
Two Authority Soldiers will attack Meteor Isle. Killing them does not grant negative reputation with The Central Authority nor does it grant positive reputation with The Children Of Navae. This event rewards the player with a mediocre chest and XP.
Meteor Isle Meteor[]
A meteor will hit Meteor Isle, spawning Meteorskippers in waves. Killing all of them will despawn the meteor and award XP and a golden chest at the center of the meteor.
Alpha Megalodaunt vs Desert Knight[]
Seemingly exclusive to the Starswept Valley, this event spawns an Alpha Megalodaunt and a Desert Knight, making them fight. If left by themselves, the Desert Knight will almost always win, due to it having almost double the health of an Alpha Megalodaunt.
Megalodaunt On a Ship[]
A Megalodaunt can spawn on a schooner in the Aratel Sea, feasting on a the corpse of an Authority Soldier. Upon killing it, a chest will spawn in the ship with mid tier loot.
Sea Events[]
Across the Luminants, events will appear in the seas. Some are challenges, some are rewards.
Fights between Factions[]
Etrean Soldiers vs Knives of Eylis (The Aratel Sea/The Etrean Sea)
Islands/Outposts[]
Various islands appear on the sea with various enemies. After defeating all enemies, two chests will spawn, one on the island and one visible after the island is sunk. Different islands have different loot tables.
- Tower in the Water:
- A Pirate outpost stands on the sea. Inside the tower are 5-6 Blacksteel Pirates. Killing all of them will give two Erisia-tier chests.
- The tower may spawn Cloaked Assassins instead of Blacksteel Pirates in the Eastern Luminant.
- Isle of Outlaws:
- The stones on both sides of the island cover the central hut like a pair of hands, which has been occupied by illegals. Defeating all of them will reward you with two large chests of Upper Erisia loot. Possible Enemies:Blacksteel Pirate/Cloaked Assassin/Bounty Hunter (NPC)
- Overrun Authority Stronghold:
- A now overrun Authority outpost, the ruins of a tropical fortress resembling Fort Merit occupied by multiple enemies. Defeating all of them will reward you with one large chest of Authority loot and one large chest of Erisia loot. Possible Enemies:Thresher/Blacksteel Pirate/Cloaked Assassin.
- The Depth Fragment:
- A rotten island floats out of the depth, with a hand-shaped stone covered in coral and mushrooms. Defeating all of the mobs will reward you with one large chest of Depths loot and one large chest of Erisia loot. Possible Enemies: Bloatskipper/Carbuncle/Cloaked Assassin/Mudskipper Brute/Mudskipper Broodlord (Eastern luminant only)
- The Church Ruins Island
- It seems like a piece of Erisia broke away from it as it drifted back from the Void Sea. Defeating all enemies present will reward you with two chests with Erisia loot. Possible Enemies: Bandit/Bandit Leader.
- Bandits' Respite
- An island with a few trees temporarily being used as a bandit camp. Defeating the bandits will reward you with two Erisia chests. There are two variations of this island.
- Sandstone Tower
- A sand island contains ruin of a sandstone tower and withered trees. Defeating all enemies on it will give you two chests filled with Starswept Valley loot. Possible Enemies:Thresher/Cloaked Assassin/Bounty Hunter (NPC)
- Sandy Remnants
- A stone island similar to Aratel, with sand flowing out of the stones. Defeating all enemies on it will give you two chests filled with Starswept Valley loot. Possible Enemies:Thresher/Cloaked Assassin
- Mudskipper Hive
- A corrosive island filled with mushrooms, corals, and a distinctive tower atop it. Depending on the variant of the island, different Mudskippers can spawn with the addition of a Mudskipper Brutes or Mudskipper Broodlord (Eastern Luminant only). Defeating them will grant a Depths Chest and an Erisia Chest.
Traveling Merchant[]
A light-blue Merchant Schooner can spawn in the seas, selling random items in it's bottom deck. This can include books, cooked food, weapons, armor, Tools and very rarely, Dye Packets.
False Merchant Ship[]
A merchant ship that spawns with a black flag and a ramp entrance on the bottom deck. This is pretty rare, and drops high tier loot. When approached, the boat will burst into flames and spawn 3-8 Cloaked Assassins after you.
Weird Trader[]
A Dinghy with a lone Ganymede. Upon talking to him, he asks you to give him three random items. Any of which could be a weapon, mantra ingredient, or ingredient. Falsely claiming to have the items he asks for will send you up flying from his uppercut, dealing high damage. However if you give him the specific items he asks for, he'll reward you with a random legendary weapon, a dye packet, Sinners Ash, or an Astral Enchant Stone (possibly other enchant stones, unconfirmed). He seems to be talking in broken english, without the use of proper grammar.
Supply the Diver Expedition[]
One Diver Quartermaster and three Diver Journeymen spawn on an outpost at The Aratel Sea, interacting with the Quartermaster will start a quest where you have to bring in supplies from Fort Merit back to the outpost in exchange for the Armorer's Needle relic or Smith's Alloy relic. The supply crate will not spawn unless the Quartermaster has been spoken to. The Divers will return to the depths once this event is completed.
WARNING: Dropping the supply crate into the ocean will softlock the quest; both the Quartermaster and Journeymen can die to mobs, also softlocking the quest. Do not attempt to drop the crate into the center of the structure; it'll drown the supply crate.
Old Stranger[]
A Dinghy with a lone Khan. He requests a canteen of clean water. When fulfilling his request, he rewards the player with Murmur: Ardour.
Having the Talent Condensation Drip will also allow the player to obtain the Murmur without a canteen. He will also accept a Redd Juice instead of a canteen of water.
The Depths (Scyphozia)[]
Mudskipper Attack[]
In the Diver Camp in Scyphozia, three Mudskippers can spawn in front of the guards. Helping the guards will reward you, giving you XP and reputation. This event does not spawn a chest.
Divers vs Monster[]
One, two or three divers taking on a monster in The Depths. With larger numbers, they might have a chance of beating certain foes, but if the monster is corrupted, they will likely always lose. Strangely, they seem to only win against Alpha Megalodaunts. This event can also appear on the surface in The Aratel Sea (Not just in Starswept Valley or The Depths) very rarely.
Faction Ambush[]
A randomly occurring event in which bounty hunters or faction soldiers will ambush you without warning. Beware as these events can occur anywhere in the overworld with a few exceptions. Bounty hunters will spawn for players with good rep with all factions and faction soldiers for the specific faction which you have Hunted or below reputation with. Enemies will be in trios or solo and will be scaled off your current level. Beware as these enemies possess powerful weapons, mantras, and even oaths.
Unique Events[]
These events are fixed at a certain place or time or are extremely rare.
Authority's Invasion of Etris[]
Raid on Erisor's Church[]
A group of three villager NPCs spawn around a campfire in Erisor's Church. Skeptical of Alastir's intentions due to his allegiance to the Duke, they ask the player for help, but then hear something outside. After some time, three waves of five Bandit Captains will spawn. The NPCs then rush to take them on, using fists to fight. The waves spawn at set timings rather than after the previous one's completion, so they can quickly overwhelm the NPCs and players. Despite the Villager's possessing a larger health pool and better combat AI, the bandits will overpower and grip them. Ironically, a Rock Golem will spawn and then wipe out the bandits. It will then face away from the church in the direction of the path leading to it. It can be fought by the player or will alternatively despawn on its own. It can be easily cheesed due to it not being able to enter the church and its laser being blocked by the walls, making it a good spot to grind weapon exp by parrying its spin with minimal danger. If the villagers survived, a chest will spawn once you kill the golem. As the villagers do not trust Alastir, you cannot turn them in for a chest. To get the event to spawn, you must interact with the villager on the left. You can also get the event chest just by pushing the left villager NPC out of the view of the bandits, and then speaking to them (This will only work if the bandits have spawned, and the villager hasn't noticed the bandits)
The Authority's invasion of Etris is a rare event. The event is foretold by a chat bubble from some NPCs around Etris before the event actually begins. More information can be found here.
The raid can be identified by the presence of Authority NPCs, specifically the Authority Soldiers, Officers, Peacekeepers and the Authority Warden within Etris, as well as the town being set on fire and covered by a large grey cloud of smoke. In this event, Authority NPC will fight Etrean Guards, Royal Guards and Polis, the latter being a very strong NPC. If left alone, the Authority is capable of winning due to their superior mantras and larger numbers.
Once the event is fully completed by killing all Authority NPCs, three large chest will spawn near the large tree in the middle of the town. These chests contain high tier loot, including end game weapons, Deep Gems, legendary rings, and is one of the few sources of the Justicar armor schematic.
During this event, most regular NPCs from the town will not be available. If you want higher chance for the raid to happen, join a new server that has "???" as its age. Wait at least two minutes at the Etris Docks. If you see the guard talking about the Authority, the raid will happen. Otherwise, leave and repeat. Note that the event won't happen if it's Winter.
Aelita[]
Aelita spawns in the center rock in the Valley of Heroes during a non-winter season. (She is a Felinor with the Visionshaper Oath, which is why her eyes are purple.) When talking to her, she prompts you to play a game, which you can't refuse. The rules are simple, no killing, and all her orders must be followed.
The first order is to use a mantra, the second order is to choose a clone that isn't her (One whose eyes that are not purple), and the third and final order is to choose her (A clone with purple eyes). Successfully completing a game will give you a small portion of EXP and gives dialogue hinting to the Winter Blizzard Knight event.
Akira[]
An uncommon event that only spawns in The Depths within the Celtorian Wastes. While reading a book, he will be interrupted by a group of Ignition Union soldiers, telling him to leave the area. In an act of defiance, Akira draws a line of ice with his Ice Wisp and dares the soldiers to cross the line, which they do. Akira will use his Resonance to pop their heads.
The player can interact with Akira if they have neutral or good reputation with The Divers. Having a bad reputation or taking the wrong dialogue option result in the same fate to the player.
After taking the right option, Akira can be found at Castle Light, where he can be talked to again to join the Lore Guild, The Divers, or obtain the origin Deepbound.
If the player were to have more than 75 charisma, you can side with The Union and insult him. You will not be gripped and Akira will flee. However this means he will not be able to let you join his faction. Doing this with anything less than 75 Charisma will get you killed.
Blizzard Knights[]
Blizzard Knights is an event that only occurs in Winter, encountered in the Valley of Heroes of Minityrsa. The Blizzard Knights are huge monsters, sporting a white body, red eyes, and a menacing red sword. They're a stronger version of the Stone Knight; having more health, completely disabling healing from Bloodless gems, and spawning in a group of six.
Once entering the main area, your screen will start shaking as giant blue meteors come crashing from the sky. Upon impact, these meteors will explode into the aforementioned Blizzard Knights.
Defeating the whole group will spawn a chest near the frozen river that's guaranteed to contain at least one of the five Hero Blades and/or possibly one of the many variants of the Ministry Cloak.
Rogue Construct[]
Upon the ice lake atop of Minityrsa, next to the Valley of Heroes, a Rogue Construct will spawn.
The Meat Lord[]
The Meat Lord is a merchant NPC that can appear on Starswept Valley and more rarely in Upper Erisia and Summer Isle. He offers a selection of 3 of several meat-based food to the player in exchange for 2 notes each. You must bow down every time you buy from him or else he will ignore you.
Stranger NPC[]
An incredibly rare event which has only been spotted in Erisia so far. A Ministry Scout will reveal themselves with the Tacet effect, revealed sitting down. If you have 50 Charisma, you can initiate a dialogue to gain the murmur Murmur: Tacet without having to go through the 5 grips. If you do not have the requirements, the dialogue will start a fight. Incredibly glitchy, with some who have fought him even reporting that he can't be gripped/executed.
The Depths Collapse[]
The ceilings of Scyphozia shake as huge earthquakes rumble through the First Layer causing meteors to rain from above. 2-4 boulders slam down landing near the player and spawn monsters from each impact. These range from Threshers, Megalodaunts, and Deep Owls to even Nautilodaunts. These monsters are frequently hostile to each other and are eligible to be corrupted. After you killed all the mobs, a chest will spawn for each boulder that the event spawned. The loot has an extremely high likelihood of having at least one Master Schematic and Deep Gem per chest.
Resonant Dawn[]
A meteor crashes down into the area, spawning an Star Knight. Defeating it allows the player to obtain their Resonance for free from the meteor. (Beware, interacting with the meteor while having a Resonance will reroll it without the option to keep the old one) You cannot choose your resonance. The Star Knight also drops an Astral Enchant Stone. This event has been seen around Summer Isle, Starswept Valley, Minityrsa, and in Voidsea.
This event is VERY RARE and the odds of it happening are near zero. You have a better chance just getting Resonance yourself.
