Resonances, also known more commonly by the community as Bells, are individual unique abilities the player character can obtain through a near-death experience in Deepwoken, represented by your character's connection with the Song in the form of a hip-slung bell that can come in various shapes and colors. Once the Resonance itself is obtained, players can call forth their ability at will with the 'C' key. Obtaining a Resonance grants the player 5 Knowledge.

Obtaining a Resonance will also allow the opening of Resonance Doors around the Depths and Overworld that can lead to shortcuts and hidden passageways, as well allowing access to the Temple of Hearts in the Depths, where resides the Shrine of Yun'Shul, a very helpful NPC that many would deem important in most progressions. For a quick guide, consider watching this video.

You can also obtain a Resonance from a very rare event in the overworld called the "Resonant Dawn Meteor." This meteor can appear in Minityrsa, Summer Isle, Starswept Valley, Bluster Rift, and Voidsea, and will be protected by a Star Knight. Once it is defeated, the meteor can be interacted with to obtain a random Resonance.

NORMAL RESONANCES

LEGENDARY RESONANCES

UNOBTAINABLE RESONANCES

Overview[]

Bellresonance

Resonances are one of the many skills that players can obtain, and can be seen as a sort of divine blessing. They are quite formidable tools in the right hands, with varying effects including (but not limited to) momentary invisibility, map-wide teleportation, and near-instant executions. Corrupted Resonances, on the other hand, are more akin to curses and Cursed Enchants, where they offer more powerful effects and useful effects of the provided Resonance at the cost of ailing the holder in some way, shape, or form.

Resonances have a set amount of unseen Resonance Points when they are obtained. They are randomly distributed to different attributes of the Resonance to achieve uniqueness between players and inspire creativity. Due to this, even if two people have the same exact Resonance, the properties may likely differ between them- such as Active Time, Speed, or Purpose Fulfillment. However, these points aren't infinite, and where one property of a Resonance might get high allocation, that would equally mean that other properties aren't getting much attention. For example, a high-healing reaper bell is less likely to have massive AOE unless the system is in your favor. Corrupted Resonances have more points to spend, resulting in more potent attributes for a Resonance.

See the Obtaining section for how to obtain a Resonance.

Resonances are physically manifested as instruments; though, in-game, the player is currently only able to obtain a bell-shaped Resonance. Upon obtainment, both the color and model of your bell are chosen randomly. Rerolling your Resonance will alter the appearance of your bell. You can use a Dye Packet to color your bell according to your preference.

Bell Models[]

Variants[]

Resonances of any category are susceptible to Variants. Variants of Resonances are not able to be changed or swayed in any way unless the Resonance itself is rerolled, so it's up to chance what variant of what Resonance someone obtains.

Normal Resonances[]

Normal Resonances are regular, common Resonances. They do not have any extra upsides, downsides, or rarity compared to sub-category Resonances such as Corrupted Resonances (see below), but they are still susceptible to being a variant.

(From data of 100 rerolls, the calculated chance of getting a normal Resonance was 92% (276/300, almost guaranteed per reroll))

Corrupted Resonances[]

Corrupted Resonances are a sub-category of Normal Resonances which are obtained identically to any other Resonances, or can be obtained by using a Sinner's Ash to corrupt your Normal Resonance. They are rarer and stronger versions of Normal Resonances, yet come with a consequence upon use, and give more points for the point-allocation system of Resonances and even give extra effects to some, allowing them to grant stronger benefits and fulfill their purpose in a way that is arguably better than that of a Normal Resonance.

Known side-effects include:

  • WITHER: On use player will receive Wither for 10% of their max HP.
  • MEGALOMANIA: On use, player will lose 40 sanity.
  • POISON: On use, player will lose 7% HP.[1] If used below 6% health, you will be left at 1 health.
  • BLOOD LOSS: On use player will lose 15% of their max blood.

Downsides do not appear to be correlated to any Resonances, meaning any Resonance can get any one downside, and can vary in severity.

  • Ironically, many Resonance effects can straight up mitigate or invalidate their downside, such as ones that grant invincibility or resistances. This would be in the case of an Corrupted Blood Scourge with Poison, where you would lose health upon calling the ability forth, but then regain the lost health and gain potentially more once the ability works.
  • Some Talents can benefit off the downsides as well, such as combining Lose Your Mind and Piercing Will with a Corrupted Resonance with Megalomania.

In the end, the true power of your Corrupted Resonance is reliant on you, your build, and your creativity, but also... luck.

All Corrupted Resonance effects are listed in their corresponding Resonance page.

(From data of 100 rerolls, the calculated chance of getting a Corrupted Resonance was 4% (1.333% per card))

Legendary Resonances[]

Legendary Resonances are a category of Resonances separate from Normal Resonances which are also obtained identically to Normal Resonances and their Corrupt Resonance versions, albeit being exceedingly rarer than both Normal and Corrupted Resonances. The only Legendary Resonances in the game currently are Teleportation and Dimensional Travel. Legendary Resonances also have a Corrupt Resonance counterpart, being Drowned Resonances, but these are incredibly difficult to obtain, naturally being extraordinarily rare due to their overlap between being a Legendary and Corrupted resonance at the same time. These resonances have a pity feature: if you don't get a legendary bell for 100 rerolls on your slot, you'll get it on the next reroll.

(From data of 100 rerolls, the calculated chance of getting a Legendary Resonance was 3.67% (~1.223% per card))

Drowned Resonances[]

These function identically to Corrupted Resonances, with the same chance of being obtained on an eligible Resonance card. The only difference is that they can only be obtained on a Legendary Resonance. This, of course, makes natural obtainment of these extremely rare. They can be more easily obtained by using Sinner's Ash on a Legendary Resonance, or repeatedly rerolling until the fourth card in your Resonance card selection, which will always be your current Resonance, turns from Legendary to Drowned.

(From data of 100 rerolls, the calculated chance of getting a corrupted Legendary Resonance (drowned) was 0.333% (0.111% per card))

Tarnished Resonances[]

Tarnished Resonances are yet another sub/category of Resonances. Unlike the other variants, obtaining, and getting rid of a Tarnished Resonance is totally in the player's hands. Upon rerolling a Resonance (see the 'Rerolling a Resonance' heading for specifics), the player's new Resonance will be inflicted with a new flaw called Tarnished. Upon receival of this flaw, you will not be able to reroll your bell or make any more wishes... but don't be scared, you can fix this!

Tarnished bells have a 1 second wind-up to being casted after activation.

Removing Tarnished requires the player to travel to either Yamaketzal and pay 1000 notes, or Misérables and choose Clarity. Going to Yamaketzal will simply remove your Tarnished status, without granting a wish, whereas going to Misérables will remove your Tarnished status and grant a wish at the Shrine of Yun'Shul so that you may reroll once again. Misérables can be found in floor 2 of the second layer, after which, if the player talked to Carrion, Father of Evolution and made him spawn in Castle Light he can now untarnish your bell for 1 knowledge instead of 15 at the Misérables how ever, this will NOT grant you a wish with Yun'Shul. You can also completely be immune to being Tarnished if you have the Echo Upgrade "Soul Plasticity"

Bell Card Selection

Obtaining[]

Obtaining your Resonance is judged by how far your character has come in terms of fighting experience- typically through Bosses (see below), Mobs, or Players. Conquering Bosses is the most common way for people to gain Progress (see below) and eventually unlock their Resonance, as many of them have a strong connection with the Song in some way, shape, or form.

If you do not talk to Sibex, you will be in the dark on how far your character has come since they first awoke, so for those looking to unlock their Resonance for the first time, paying a visit to him is advised-- and please visit his page to understand what you must do with him, as well as how to interpret what he tells you.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO FOLLOW THE PATH THAT YOU ARE GIVEN. KILLING BOSSES WILL GIVE YOU PROGRESS, JUST NOT BONUS PROGRESS IF YOU ARENT ON THE BOSS PATH.

You can also very rarely obtain your Resonance from the Resonant Dawn event, although you do not get to pick your resonance this way.

The Path - Progress & Nature of Your Soul[]

The main factor in obtaining a Resonance is how far you are in the hidden stat known as Progress (commonly referred to by the community as "bell prog"). There are many ways to obtain Progress, and the most effective ways can vary from character to character- which can be judged by Sibex, who will inspect your Soul and inform you on what the best way for you to obtain Progress is. Additionally, he can also make note of how close you are to obtaining your Resonance.

Possible dialogue results:
Boss Path Depths Path PVP Path Inspired Regalia
Sibex: "Ah... I can hear your Soul drawing back, lining up an arrow to defeat its latest foe. It yearns to defeat the strongest of foes. Though note that this is not the only path available to you, as the Depths is known to draw out the Song within all of us..." Sibex: "Ah... An inquisitive soul... Your Soul's curiosity must be quenched. What lies within the Depths? Delving into that realm will surely bear fruit for you..." Sibex: "Ah... I can hear the drumbeats of war within your Soul. It's clear that it thirsts for combat. Though note that this is not the only path available to you, as the Depths is known to draw out the Song within all of us..." Sibex: "Ah, interesting. Your Soul is giving off a consistent frequency. It's kinda like you've tuned an instrument. That's more than can be said for most, but still quite a way off."

What to do:
Fight and kill Boss Monsters, including:
Extra/Important information:
The most important part to remember when it comes to bosses is how Progress is handled if soloing the boss or doing it in a group:
  • Defeating bosses solo give more Progress.
  • In a group, the MVP (most damage dealt) gets Progress
  • In a group, dealing 80% of the damage of the MVP grant Progress.
  • Bosses have their own pros and cons when it comes to which you should farm, and why. Any will work, but some obviously work better than others.

Listed from most to least preferred:

  • Scion of Ethiron gives the highest Progress reward of all boss monsters, allowing the player obtain a resonance in just 2-3 runs as well as dropping the best loot in the game. However, his fight brings a lot of risk as the player is incredibly prone to wiping in the Second Layer.
  • Chaser, Scholar of the Crimson Contract grants a great amount of progress, which becomes even higher when done without a Light Hook. It can be a good way to farm great loot as well as get Progress along the way. Can be risky if the player is fighting Chaser for the first time, as the player can be wiped in the Second Layer. *
  • Duke Erisia gives a good amount of Progress on grip, and is reliable to summon. While his loot isn't too great, this was the preferred way of obtaining resonance for a long time for most players.
  • The Ferryman gives a moderate amount of progress and is easy to summon, but has a very long fight, and can easily become lethal to those unexperienced with his dance. However he is the most forgiving boss as he gives you more than enough time to set up a campfire and heal in between attacks (as long as you aren't too close to him). You can earn season-based loot and the Stormseye from his fight as well, but for most, the Progress is more worth it. Side: The Ferryman now provides Knowledge. See more.
  • Maestro Evengarde Rest gives a good amount of progress and it's very easy to rematch him. However, he is extremely punishing to those unfamiliar with his moveset. Should you become familiar with his fight, you'll be rewarded with some of the best loot in the game and ease of access.
  • Dread Serpent has a high Progress reward, but is hard to find without an Ardour Manifestation. As a bonus, finishing him will provide you with the Ardour murmur if you do not already have a murmur. You can remove your murmur with a Yun'shul wish.
  • Primadon has been deemed less reliable to fight by the community upon the drop of Verse 2. While one is still able to fight him for Progress, there are now better ways to gain Progress that also provide better side benefits (see the top of the list). The loot he drops as well is considered outdated by most of the community. Side: Primadon now provides Knowledge. See more.
  • The Enforcer is not recommended for reasons that should be obvious, having to go to The Depths and face him in the trial each time, risking wiping from it or other players. While fighting him is debatably safer than the two below, wiping to disconnecting is still a possibility if below 60% health.
  • Blizzard Knights are, by far, one of the worst methods of getting Progress. They spawn in a voidzone known as the Valley of Heroes in highly lethal swarms, during Winter in Minityrsa, and if that wasn't enough, they give almost no Progress... However, they can provide you with Hero Blades if you're interested in getting one.
  • Nautilodaunts are confirmed to give Progress, however due to being a rare and highly dangerous Depths mob that can be interrupted by other players, he is highly advised against, as this may as well just be the worst way to get Progress when looking at efficiency... Though, if you're interested in an Elite Pathfinder, you could try your luck.

What to do:
Go to The Depths, and kill Players, Corrupted Monsters, and Monsters unique to The Depths.
Extra/Important information:
Only monsters unique to The Depths will count. This includes Gigamed, Crustaceous Rex, The Enforcer, and Nautilodaunt. Other monsters WILL NOT give progress, unless they are Corrupted.

When killing players, you will not gain Progress upon grip unless they are around your general Power level. You must also bear the weight of ruining someone's day, but if you intend to go this method, then that should be easy for you... isn't that right, murderer?

What to do:
Fight and kill Players. Doing this via the Chime of Conflict is recommended. You need to kill about 30 players to get resonance
Extra/Important information:
When killing players, you will not gain Progress upon grip unless they are around your general Power level.

Another important thing to note is The Chime of Conflict, which is safer and will give more Progress, as opposed to The Overworld or The Depths.

What to do:
Anything. You have all paths enabled, you gain bonus Progress from everything.
Extra/Important information:
You are given every path available at once. As there's no way of knowing when you awaken the Inspired Regalia (outside of talking to Sibex), you will hardly be able to specifically benefit from the aformentionned effect. Nontheless, it is still useful in its own way.

Collision with Fate - Achieving your Resonance[]

IMPORTANT NOTE 1: Jumping in the void with less than half HP will STILL wipe you even if you have maximum Progress.

Once you face death in The Depths and your health goes down to 0%, if you have maximum Progress:

  • Instead of getting knocked, you will experience divine intervention:
  • An air-splitting bell choir will play throughout the entirety of The Depths as you rise once again.
  • You will be healed to 100%.
  • Your Blood, Thirst and Hunger meters will be replenished.
  • Your Sanity will be fully replenished
  • Finally, a hand of 3 cards will appear before you, with each card providing their name, rarity, and a brief description of what they do. Deep magenta cards indicate a Corrupted Resonance, light gold cards are Legendary, while light lavender cards are Drowned.

Once you select your card, using C will activate your Resonance.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2: Resonance obtainment is sometimes used by players as a get-out-of-jail-card in The Depths.

  • While many players choose to commit to "bell checking" in order to obtain their bell quickly by intentionally dying to enemies, other players might instead choose to obtain their bell through the natural intended means of defying death. Obtaining your Resonance through the intended means will save you from being knocked once in Layer 1/Scyphozia or Layer 2/Eternal Gale/New Kyrsa (tested), and most likely save you from wiping.
  • Otherwise, it's safest to bell check in Layer 2 after obtaining a Light Hook from Klaris, as the Light Hook prevents you from being wiped in Layer 2.
  • Note that any cause of death, including from enemies, PVP, dying from Insanity, and parasites in Layer 2 is able to bell check.

Rerolling & Resonance Doors[]

Around The Depths and Overworld, Resonance Doors (example in the picture below) can be found. Resonance Doors are greyish doors with a white sphere in their center that require a Resonance to be opened. They facilitate shortcuts to get through normally impassable areas of the map.

ResonanceDoor Depths(to Yun'Shul)
This very specific and unique Resonance Door is within a cave in The Depths, which leads to the Temple of Hearts. Within the temple resides the Shrine of Yun'Shul. Interacting with the shrine without having a Resonance WILL WIPE YOU (Unless you're a Deepbound) (not possible by legitimate methods, unless you used the deepbound-exclusive crevice). The shrine provides many different "wishes", one of which is rerolling your Resonance, giving you another Resonance card draw.

The draw consists of four cards, three of which are selected randomly (identically to the three you rolled when first obtaining your resonance) and the last of the four always being your current Resonance, albeit with a different stat allocation.

  • You can glitch through these by spamming slide-jump and dash, you can also get a friend to glitch through and place a Chime of Dwelling in interact reach.
  • If your current Resonance isn't a Corrupted Resonance, the fourth card has a chance of being Corrupted. If your current Resonance is a Corrupted Resonance, the fourth card will always be a non-corrupted version of your Resonance with an extra fifth card of your Corrupted Resonance alongside it.

This is not without a cost, however. Rerolling your Resonance inflicts you with the Tarnished Flaw, which can severely downgrade your Resonance and prevents you from making a wish again. As stated before, Yamaketzal is able to remove Tarnished from you for 1000 Notes, whereas making a deal with Misérables will clear the Tarnished flaw and returns your resonance to normal.

In accordance with the old pre-Verse 2 rule of wishes, players will get one free wish from Yun'Shul every 3 levels.

Trivia[]

  • You need Power 3 to reroll your bell
  • Resonances cannot be used when doing Chime of Conflict 1v1s.
  • The higher the level you are, the easier it is to obtain a Resonance
  • Resonances come in the form of any instrument, but the Bell-form is the only one seen in game.
  • The most popular, now debunked, method around the time Deepwoken released involved staying in The Depths for seven hours straight whilst farming for level & luck. Although being comically wrong, it set the groundwork for people to discover the truth behind Resonances.
  • A number of doors other than the one at the Temple of Hearts require a Resonance to open. One is at the end of the parkour in the Depths, one is in Saramaed Summit, and one is near a waterfall at Aratel Island.
  • It also seems like the amount of Progress needed for a Resonance share among all slots in an account. (If the previous slot gets a Resonance early then other slots will likely get it early too.)
  • If Sibex tells you "Well look at you, my friend! You're practically beaming with the Song!" and you don't have a bell, DO NOT try to go and bell check, as it is most likely a bug. If this happens, rejoin until his dialogue changes.
  • Before Resonances had Cards, the only way to know what type your Resonance was from a circular aura that occurred when you obtained it, being white for Common, purple for Corrupted, and yellow for Legendary.
  • Near release, there were rumors of Blessed Resonances- opposite of Corrupted Resonances- existing and being equally as rare. These have been debunked, and do not exist in the game.
  • Two of the bell models resemble the Beckoning Bell and Small Resonant Bell from Bloodborne.
  • Ragoozer has confirmed that he is interested in Evolved Bells.[citation needed]
  • Resonances might not be common knowledge to most, seeing as Alastir had noted the bell on Duke Erisia's waist but did not recognize it as a Resonance
  • Arch Mage confirmed that back in Verse One, Adept & Mark of the Lone Warrior didn't affect resonance progression.
  • If you reroll Corrupted Resonance or Drowned Resonance you will get 5 cards, 3 new Resonances, the corrupted bell you had (different variant & points) and the non corrupted bell version you had.
