This is the boss encountered at the end of Layer 2, Floor 2. For its puppeteer and namesake, see Ethiron, The Maelstrom's Eye.

“ The egg hatches soon, little diver. The wails of the screaming child born under the snow will bring it all crashing down. ”

Description[]

The Scion of Ethiron is a boss encountered within his bedchamber at the end of the second floor of the Eternal Gale. It's treated as a "final boss" to the game, allowing the access of endgame content such as Kyrsan Medallions among other things. It is tied to Ethiron, acting as his puppet and avatar, with sealing it also sealing him temporarily, as described by Naerotiv. After being awoken by your disturbance, it takes the form of a skeletal monster made up of bones and feathers, with it's head being distinctively tetrahedron shaped, with a color scheme of purple-pinks and yellow fiber protruding from each corner. It also completely empties your lighthook to 0 minutes if any time was remaining.

It uses a variety of attacks to defeat you, notably summoning bones and directing them at either the player or the ground. In addition, it has the abilities of Galebreathe, able to fire a large laser, blind you, or fire a devastating death sphere at the player, obliterating any hit by it. Do note it is heavily resistant to Vampirism and Bloodless Gems.

Upon defeat, five chests containing Kyrsan Medallions will spawn in the City, along with a Large Chest at the entrance of his arena; containing a myriad of loot, including rare or exclusive items such as the Kyrsieger, or Whistling Periapt.

However, defeating him will also prompt a hard 3 minute timer, or 180 seconds, in order to escape the City at the Light Hook at the front of the city before you are guaranteed to wipe, more information can be found on Second Layer/New Kyrsa.

Name/Danger Description Visual Demo
Vehemens Ventus
(★★★)
The Scion holds its hands together and charges up a powerful attack for ~10 seconds. Once the attack is released, approximately 3 seconds after the charging sfx finishes, a large purple gale ball will be thrown in a player's direction with a loud sound cue. Upon impact, it deals insanely high posture and Wind damage.
  • It can be easily avoided with an air-dash, Ghost/Dark Rift, jumping down a floor, using a waypoint with Run It Back or using Portals.
  • Payback, despite not being disabled like other invincibility moves, will not prevent damage from this attack.
  • This attack can be cancelled with a group by attacking three small gale balls at the first floor, but is un-recommended due to the time it takes, along with requiring 2 people.
  • This attack is able to be tanked on the right setup, but is not recommended.

Pressurized Wind
(★★☆)
The Scion charges up its arm and releases a purple laser, locking onto a random player and forcing them to parry it.
  • While the damage is punishing if you get hit by the full beam, you should parry it on reaction to taking damage rather than reacting to the animation, as the animation is shared with Blinding Gale.

The Scion pulls its arm back, then swings at the player.
  • The arm will remain for ~2 seconds after hitting the player, regardless of if it hit or not, leaving the Scion vulnerable for a few hits on parry.

Bonestaves of Eld
(★★☆)
The Scion launches three bones per player in a set order.
  • These do medium posture damage per bone and can be blocked or parried.
  • If blocked/parried, the bone will fall onto the floor to be picked up and put into a shrine.
  • If the bone instead hits, does a low amount of damage and will not fall onto the floor.
  • If the bone collides with a wall, it will fizzle out and despawn.
  • This attack always targets the same players in the same order unless someone dies/leaves.

Bones will appear on the ground and grow upwards, this can be used in combination with any other move.

(★★☆)
Bones will rise from the ground and circle around a single floor.
  • Similar to Bonegrow in able to remain active during other attacks, but sends you further, is more constant, does more damage, and is completely unable to be blocked.

Passives[]

  • Monster Resistance - Physical attacks deal 25% less damage to the Scion of Ethiron. Elemental Attacks deal 2x damage to the Scion of Ethiron
  • Stringed Puppet - The Scion is unable to be damaged by any means including damage reflection/redirection unless stunned by the nine-fold ritual or using its punch.
  • Unharvestable - All forms of on-damage healing such as Vampirism and Bloodless gems are negated if used on it.
  • Reverence - You are unable to gain Tempo from basic attacking or using mantras on the Scion. Many forms of on-demand Immunity moves such as Beast Burrow are disabled.

Beating the Scion[]

While the Scion of Ethiron may appear intimidating, it is widely considered one of the easier bosses in the game. Aside from its ultimate ability, none of its attacks pose a significant threat. It is crucial to maintain a calm and composed mindset, as panicking is the most common reason players are hit by its ultimate.

Note that many on-demand invincibility abilities are disabled during this fight and should not be relied upon to avoid the ultimate.

The primary strategy for defeating the Scion is to use the bones it throws during its Bone Throw move. You must place these bones into their corresponding shrines. This will stun the boss, creating a window for you to deal heavy damage. To accomplish this, simply block or parry the bonestaves and then run to a shrine while carrying them.

A secondary, albeit much slower, win condition is to simply ignore the bone mechanic. If you allow the Scion to hit you with its punch multiple times, it will eventually die without summoning the Kyrsgarde snipers for health packs.

For health packs to spawn, you must have anchored the Scion using all nine shrines at least once. After this, multiple Kyrsgarde snipers will spawn during each cycle.

To avoid the ultimate, you can either parry or dodge it. The dodging method involves sliding, waiting for the audio cue of the Scion firing its orb, and then jumping and air-dashing to evade the attack. To parry the ultimate, wait for the same audio cue, but begin your parry just before the orb makes contact. While these maneuvers may seem difficult initially, they will become muscle memory with practice. For players without experience, air-dashing is generally the easier method to learn.

Important: When carrying a bone, you are unable to use Q-dodges or slides. If the Scion's ultimate targets you while you are holding a bone, you must either drop it and run or learn to parry the ultimate.

Loot Table[]

Upon defeating the Scion, it will drop a large chest at the entrance of his bedchamber containing:

Trivia[]

  • The usage of scion in this context refers to a young shoot or twig of a plant, especially one cut for grafting or rooting. This might be a metaphor for it being just a tiny piece of Ethiron, one yet to grow. However, it is often referred to as the avatar of Ethiron, or the form of Ethiron's power as stated by Cap'n Orlandeau.
  • It's heavily implied that it's appearance, consisting of bones, no skin, and large dendrite structures rather than a full brain, is actually the result of a lack of development. Carrion refers to the Scion as a "screaming child" and given the context of its name, the Scion is most likely still in an "infant" stage. Given its feathers and the shape of its skull, a "mature" Scion of Ethiron would likely take the form a bird-like humanoid.
  • The song that plays during the fight is ELEISON [1] by Naktigonis.
    • This song gets updated to 11:59 [2] (also by Naktigonis) for the escape.
  • Update logs refer to it as Ethiron's Scion, but dying to it or hovering over the danger icon in its fight states its name is Scion of Ethiron. Also referred to as Ethiron's Avatar in the Restore Rulebook before being changed in 2023.
  • The branches on its head are inspired by dendrites in neuron diagrams.
  • The developers refer to the Scion of Ethiron using singular they/them pronouns. This behavior is shared with Yun'Shul.
  • Named "avatar" in the game files.
