- “ A solemn sanctuary carved in stone, where warriors hone the dancing steps of war. ”
Description[]
The Vigils are a taciturn society of swordsmen in service to the Kingdom of Etrea, an offshoot colony that trains members of the Etrean military in the way of the sword. They are led by the current Maestro Evengarde Rest, with Stratos as the second-in-command. Residing on the aptly-named Isle of Vigils, they train youths to fight and serve Etrea. All Vigils wield the Galebreathe attunement, paired with Etrean specialty weapons.
Not much is confirmed about their ranking system since most Vigils maintain a position of silence towards outsiders, but the descriptions of various pieces of equipment reveal some details about how they function. Their leader is known as a "Maestro", and they operate an autobiographical recordkeeping branch known as the Scholars of the Cloud. What is notable, however, is their impartiality regarding races; much unlike The Central Authority and Etrea itself, Vigil guardsmen are of varied backgrounds and their histories often have no bearing on their treatment. Vigils are very closely-knit, showing a level of distrust to anyone other than themselves—even if the person is highly regarded by Etrea. It is only when an individual performs massive favours, such as saving one of their lives, that Vigils become more hospitable to them.
- The lowest rank of Vigils are initiates, who don brown robes and do not participate in real fights.
- Their qualified swordsmen are known as Blade Temple Guards, who wear the Cloak of Winds alongside the Glassdancer Wraps, with a Vigil Hood to keep their identities secret. They are posted across the Isle, fighting Bandits and criminal players.
- Certain non-apprentice Vigils are granted the Deepwoken Cloak in place of their Glassdancer Wraps.
- There exists apprentices who are granted the Deepwoken Cloak. Their name implies they are in training to become a fully fledged swordsman.
- Elites of the Etrean military are known as Vigil Swordsmen, though their exact affiliation to the Vigils, and whether or not their name is an indicator of their loyalties, is left ambiguous. Them being exclusively Etrean suggests that they were already serving in the Etrean military before being selected by the government to receive training in the Temple of the Blade.
- "Keepers" are operatives of the Scholars of the Cloud.
- Untitled second-in-command.
- Maestro, the leaders of the Vigils. There can only be one Maestro at a given time.
After befriending Evengarde, he reveals his knowledge about the true nature of Etrea's government. His stance towards The Ministry implies that the Vigils aren't held under the same sort of control that Etrean citizens and soldiers are.
